St. Barnabas Parish, Bayville, NJ

+Believing, Belonging, & Becoming+

Our Parish Mission:
We are a diverse, active community, rooted in the love of Christ.
We recognize who we are and all that we have comes from God.

In gratitude we respond in prayer, service, and sharing of our time,
talent and treasure.

Through the sacraments, we are committed to evangelization,
learning, teaching, and proclaiming God's Word to His people.

WELCOME
We invite you to join us as we gather to pray and worship our Lord Jesus Christ.
We meet regularly to celebrate our unity in the sacraments, in the reading of God’s Word,
and in our care for one another.

In a parish as large as ours, it is challenging to build a strong spirit of community.
We invite your active participation. The variety of  programs, outreach, committees, and ministries described in this directory are  intended to include you and to meet your spiritual and social needs.

Since we are all called to serve God in others we encourage you to examine each listing and decide which you would find most fulfilling. Your input will be greatly appreciated and your hands will be most welcome.  The Sunday Bulletin is the best source of information about the activities listed here. There you will find the names and numbers to call if you wish to volunteer or to obtain more information.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND STEWARDSHIP OF SERVICE

CATECHETICAL MINISTRIES

  1. BIBLE STUDY
Various opportunities for studying the Bible are provided during the
year. This allows us to explore and reflect on the meaning of the
Scriptures at a deeper level than is possible during Mass. During these
sessions there is an opportunity to reflect on how the Word of God
can and should impact our daily lives.            Ext. 332

2. BAPTISM PREPARATION
This mini-retreat takes place every other month in the Rucki Hall Faith Formation Center.  Our evening together is a time of prayer and preparation for parents and godparents, providing formation and information about the Sacrament
of Baptism and the responsibilities they assume when they choose this
sacrament for their child. Questions about godparents, certificates of
eligibility, Christian parenting, and the rituals of the ceremony are
addressed. Attendance at this program is required before a child may
be baptized. Please call the parish office if you want your
  child baptized.         Ext. 100

3. FAITH FORMATION
Our Bishop has recognized the great need for Adult Faith Formation
as a tool to build community, foster stewardship, and to empower our
young parents to truly be the first teachers of the faith for their children.
He has invited our parish, in conjunction with the Diocesan Office of
Religious Education, to participate in an exciting new pro-gram. A
Team will be trained to equip them to present this program to our
parishioners. We hope that it will fill a void that may exist in the educa
tion and understanding of our Catholic Faith.                         Ext. 128

4. MINI SUNDAY SCHOOL
The purpose of this school is to support families in training their youngsters (3-6 years) in the practice of the Catholic faith and the  love of God, as portrayed in the Gospels. To do this, the Mini Sunday  School uses printed materials, games, songs, and plays that help the children experience God. The school meets on Sundays, during the 10:00 AM Mass from October to May except during holidays. There is also limited baby-sitting (called Cradle Roll) for children  under 3 years of age during this Mass.                   Ext. 128

5. PRE-CANA MINISTRY
The Pre-Cana Program is organized and conducted by a team of
married couples from within the parish, together with a priest modera-
tor. You can be a member of this team if you are committed to God,
the Church, your marriage, and are willing to share your experiences
with the engaged couples. The purpose of the program is to prepare
engaged couples for their upcoming marriage. Attendance at this or a
similar program is required for those who wish to be married in the
Catholic Church. These programs are held three times a year, on a
Friday and Saturday evening.                           Ext. 100

6. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (CCD)
Reverence for each other motivates us to create a religious education
program which promotes community, emphasizes gospel values,
encourages daily prayer, and fosters frequent participation in the
sacramental life of the Church. We hope that our program will lead all
to a deeper commitment to the Church and to an active transforma-
tion of the world. This program is intended especially for the children
of the parish. Regular classes and consistent attendance should begin
in the first grade and continue until the child has celebrated the Sacrament of  Confirmation. Volunteer teachers must have a criminal background check through fingerprinting.    See our Religious Education page for more details as well as
our section on Sacraments.                      Ext. 128

7. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS  (RCIA)
The RCIA Program is for the instruction of adults who wish to learn
more about the Catholic faith and/or wish to celebrate the sacraments
of Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and/or Confirmation. Meetings are held
on Mondays from 7:30 to 9:000 PM in the Adult Faith Center in Rucki Hall.
The Program starts in September and continues until the following Easter.                       Ext. 116

8. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)
Vacation Bible School is a half-day program offered to the children of the parish during the last week of July. It includes daily bible lessons, arts, crafts, music, play activities, and a snack. The program ends with the celebration of Mass on Sunday where the children lead the con-gregation with the hymns they learned in VBS. They also participate in the Mass in other appropriate ways. It is open to all children from those entering kindergarten through those in the sixth grade. There is a small fee for the use of materials during the week.                  Ext. 126

9.  WHOLE COMMUNITY CATECHESIS
The goal of Whole Community Catechesis is to involve the entire parish family in the ongoing formation that takes place through the Sunday Mass and readings.  One important aspect of this is to offer a "Question of the Week" which can be found in the bulletin each week.  The Question is derived from the Gospel on Sunday or one of the readings at Mass.  The Mass is the source and summit of all that we do, and thus all our parish functions are connected to Sunday Mass through Whole Community Catechesis.  We encourage families to connect their tables at home with the Lord's table by discussing the Question of the Week together at any time throughout the week.  Each parish meeting begins with a sharing of the Question in order to allow faith sharing to become a regular part of our life together as a parish community.  As we move on in the process of Whole Community Catechesis we will be offering Family Catechetical (learning) sessions, Adult Faith Formation sessions, discussion sessions after Masses and much more.  We hope you participate in Whole Community Catechesis and use the Question of the Week on a regular basis.  Families and groups who have utilized this have shared very postive spiritual  results.   ext. 128

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

1. ALTAR SERVERS
Parishioners, from the 4th grade to adults, assist at weekend and Holyday Masses. They are trained in the duties of Altar Servers. 2. CHILDREN’S LITURGY COMMITTEE
The Children’s Liturgy Committee plans and organizes the children’s Mass. The Children perform the function of Lectors, reading the  scriptures that are assigned for the day and lead in the prayers of the faithful. They also bring the offerings to the altar at the appropriate time. This Mass is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 10:00 AM from September to May. Eucharistic Ministers are approved by the staff and mandated by the Bishop to serve in our parish. At-tendance at training sessions is required and ministers agree to serve at the  Masses scheduled.        Ext. 104

4. LECTORS
Lectors assist at Mass by reading the scheduled Mass Scriptures, the prayers of the faithful, and any announcements that are needed. Since the Word of God should be proclaimed with clarity and meaning, lectors are chosen who have good diction, are willing to spend time pre-paring the readings, and are prompt and committed to their assignments. They meet as needed.        Ext. 104

5. LITURGY COMMITTEE
This committee assists the Pastor and staff members with liturgy pre-paration according to Church and Diocesan guidelines, parish traditions, and personal experiences. With the help of the Pastor and staff we gain a knowledge of and conform to the church and liturgical  doc-uments which have been mandated by Vatican II. They also evaluate the liturgies since the previous meeting and asses the appearance of the worship space. They meet at least once a month.             Ext. 104

6. USHERS
They are present at the Masses to assist in the good order of the litur-gical assembly. They are a welcoming presence to all who come to worship and assist anyone who is in need of information. They especially assist in receiving the offerings of the faithful, and helping in any emergency situations.  Volunteers are welcome.                     Ext. 100
7. WORSHIP ENVIRONMENT- Barnabas Active Gardeners- BAGs
Volunteers assume the responsibility to see that the church and ground are maintained in an attractive and welcoming manner that increases the at-mosphere of worship.  Special Feasts, such as the major Holydays of Christmas and Easter, require special decorations and extra people  are always needed at these times.                                          Ext. 104

4. PRO LIFE COMMITTEE- Ext. 306
The St. Barnabas Respect Life Ministry is from the Womb to the Tomb, if you will, and is made up of various sub-committees.
Our patron Saint is Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati....he lived life to it’s fullest as an adventurer, climbing mountains, skiing, etc...came from a wealthy family but shunned it’s lifestyle, both parents were not Catholic or even the least bit religious, but yet at an early age he felt a strong calling to do the Lords work, he serviced and ministered to those in the poor areas and to Polio patients....contacted polio and died at the age of 24. We chose him as opposed to a St. who died from giving child birth, or a mother,  etc....because of his love and appreciation of the gift of life!! He did not waste a moment of that gift!!

Sub Committees:
A.  Right To Life: which really isn’t a sub- committee per say but of course works in the area of defending innocent life in the womb.
•         We are involved with witnessing at the abortion clinic on Rt. 37 most especially during the Fall/Spring 40 Day for Life campaign.
•         Every Saturday morning our ministry has a designated hour of adoration for the unborn at 9AM.
•         Some of us have been involved in witnessing by working the Ocean County Right to Life table at the Ocean County Fair.
•         We participate in the Right To Life march in Washington and the Bishops Witness for Life Procession in Red Bank every year.
•         Whenever we can by selling Right to Life items in the store we do that too.
One very beautiful thing that has come from our efforts in the area of Right to Life is our “Visitation Team”(of course based on Mary’s visit to Elizabeth) which was created to assist young pregnant girls and their families in choosing the path of life.

B  Single Mom’s Committee- This committee supports and nurtures single moms in their role as single parents by offering help when needed along with holding events which provide opptys for the moms to learn about resources and issues surrounding their lives.  Most especially, offering them an oppty to gather together in friendship and sisterhood! Our last  single Mom’s event was on July 22nd and it was a BBQ in Fr. Brennan Hall/parking area.  It was an awesome night of sharing and healing for some Mom’s that just needed a place to go with their kids and enjoy time with other adults. Committee Head – Terry Pasquarello
Events in the past have been:
Pizza and Pamper night(pizza and nails done) also a lot of sharing.
Speaker workshop with creator of My Mother’s Keeper – a grass root organization that supports Single Mom’s by way of education, job placement, financial assistance and emotional support.
Coupon/$$ Saving Tip Seminar – Mom’s learned how to shop wisely and use coupons!!
Spiritual Cleansing Workshop –
Holiday Shopping Mom’s Night out – Mom’s were offered an evening of babysitting so that they could go out and holiday shop without their children!
Movie Night – Offered Crafts for Moms – Caren Stichter taught our Mom’s how to make Wallets while the kids watched a movie and at popcorn!!

C.  Education Committee- This committee is responsible for educating our parish community on the Respect Life Issues such as abortion, natural family planning, adoption, Families with Special Needs, End of life issues such as Advanced Directives, Assisted Suicides, Caregivers support, etc..

D.  Adoption Committee- This committee ran their first event last October and it was an Adoption Expo.  About 13 adoption organizations from NJ, NY and PA  were represented and our parish community as well as surrounding community was able to learn about adoption.  The next event for this committee will be held on Saturday, September 11th and is the first in a series of workshops on adoption.  This first one will be hosted by Concerned Persons for Adoption, a NJ advocacy group.  They were represented at our expo back in October.  The Workshop is called Adoption 101 and will give attendees a general overview of what adoption is and if it fits in their life and that of their families. The next workshop(pending approval)Date TBD will focus on the costs of adoption and break through some of the myths surrounding these costs etc. Committee Head – Marc Stelevich

E.  End of Life Committee -  Last July we held a Catholic Advance Workshop as well as this July as you are aware. These workshops are very popular and the committee is hoping to do these workshops at least twice a year.  Head – Marie Dibella

F.  Youth Committee -  It is so critical to start the Respect Life education at an early age!! Young members join in on the March for Life in Washington, and participate in the activities of most of the sub committees.  We are always looking for new member and new ideas!  Head – Caitlin Higgins

G.  Special Needs Families Committee -Headed up by Michelle Feery and her husband this committee is still in the planning stages and is preparing to have their first meeting hopefully in September.  This committee will deal with the quality of life within Special Needs families. Support to Parents and siblings while educating the parish community on what it’s like to live with special needs breaking through the stigma which most people place on people with disabilities.

H.  Suicide Survivors and Prevention Committee -  After gathering up a solid and committed  team of people, we would enlist the help of professionals that work with our Diocese to create the mission of this committee.  The committee as with most of all the other committees, would simply be a point of resource for parishioners who may need help themselves or know of loved ones that do.  This committee would be a resource/educational outlet and perhaps form a support group.  We would have professionals come speak and offer information.

I.  Legislative Committee - This committee is headed up by Vinnie Gabulaski and is involved in letter writing  campaigns to our Legislators National and State level on all Respect Life Issues.

VOLUNTEERS
Having read this booklet you must realize that these many groups exist only because good people volunteer their time, talent, and love to help their fellow parishioners. Indeed, you are the Church. Without you none of this would be possible. We, therefore, ask you to prayerfully consider where you can be of the most service to others. We need you.
Those volunteers working with children are required to have fingerprinting done for a criminal background check (ask office for details).

THE SACRAMENTS

BAPTISM
Baptism is the sacrament of belonging to, and membership in the Church, which is the Body of Christ. In the celebration of Baptism God shares with us the gift of His own Divine Life. New members are welcomed into the community of faith at St. Barnabas each week. Baptism is celebrated during Mass on the first Sunday of the month and at 1:30 PM on all other Sundays. Parents of infants to be baptized need to be registered in the parish and have attended the Baptism Preparation Class. Children from ages 4 to 6 are prepared for the Sacrament during the Mini Sunday School, those between 7 and 17 are prepared in the CCD Program and those adults who are over 17 are prepared in the RCIA Program. Godparents must have a certificate of eligibility from their parish..
732-269-2208 Ext. 100

CONFIRMATION (click here for further information)
Confirmation is the sacrament in which we experience, affirm, and receive in a deeper way the life of the Spirit that we first received in Baptism. This sacrament is usually celebrated in the spring of a teen’s seventh grade year. The Bishop of the Diocese is the usual administrator of the sacrament. Regular attendance and continuous participation in the CCD Program is a prerequisite. Adults will be prepared for the sacrament through the RCIA Program and will be confirmed at the Easter Vigil celebration. Sponsors need a certificate of eligibility from their parish.     732-269-2208 Ext. 128

HOLY EUCHARIST
Receiving the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus should be a regular part of our participation in the Eucharistic Liturgy (Mass). You have this opportunity every day at the 8:00 AM Mass. On weekends the Parish celebrates its unity at all Masses - on Saturday at 5:00 PM and at 6:30 PM (Spanish) and on Sunday at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 12:00 NOON and 5:00 PM. First Communion is usually held in May during a child’s second grade in school. They receive the Lord with the Parish Community at one of the weekend Masses.  Ext. 126

EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY TO HOMEBOUND- If you or a loved one is homebound, please contact the Parish Office, ext. 100, to schedule regular visits with a Eucharistic Minister or priest.

RECONCILIATION -Confession and Penance
Reconciliation rooms offer individuals the opportunity for “face to face” or “behind the screen” confession. During Lent and Advent communal celebrations of our reconciliation with God are offered. The Sacrament is available on an individual basis every Saturday from 4:00 to 4:30 PM or by a special appointment with a priest. First Penance is usually held during a child’s second grade in school for youngsters in the CCD Program.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK
No longer referred to as the “Last Rites” the sick may request this anointing at any time they feel the need for God’s grace and healing love. During the year a communal celebration of Anointing takes place during one of the Sunday Masses. This is announced beforehand in the Sunday Bulletin. At Community Medical Center this sacrament is celebrated by the Catholic Chaplain. At the nursing station the sick person or a family member should ask that the Chaplain be called. Do not wait until the person is near death. The Sacrament is not only for the terminally ill but for any and all the sick. Ext. 333

MARRIAGE
Persons wishing to celebrate this Sacrament need to call the Parish Office at least one year prior to the intended date of the ceremony. Participation in a pre-marriage program (Pre-Cana, Engaged Encounter, etc.) is required. Weddings are held on Saturdays at 11:00 AM and at 2:00 PM. Friday weddings will only be held at 4:00 PM. The couple needs a copy of the parish wedding policies from the parish office.  See below for our Wedding polices.  If you plan on scheduling a wedding with us, please read below....

VOCATIONS/HOLY ORDERS- Have you been discerning a possible vocation to the priesthood, religious life or the deaconate?  If you have questions about becoming a priest, religious, or deacon, please contact Fr. Kevin ext. 104 or Fr. Mike ext. 116.

ST. BARNABAS CHURCH WEDDING POLICIES:  A GUIDE FOR MARRIAGE PREPARATION
CONGRATULATIONS!
The St. Barnabas Parish Family rejoices in your decision to love and marry each other.  We are happy that you have decided to come to our parish to prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage.  As you know you are not just preparing for the Wedding Day, but a new life together as husband and wife.

No doubt you will spend much time in planning your big day with dresses, invitations, tuxedoes etc.  But it is now most important for you to take a keen interest in the Sacrament of Marriage.

In order to make sure that you are willing and prepared to enter into the Sacrament of Marriage, and in order to preserve the sacredness and meaning of this sacrament, St. Barnabas and the Diocese of Trenton presents these guidelines for our couples who are taking this most significant step in life.  It may seem like a lot of information, but please read it over carefully so that you have no problem with what is required and things will flow smoothly for you.

It is our hope that your Wedding will be a beautiful celebration and we want to help you be assured of this.  It is even more our hope that your marriage is beautiful, life-giving and truly sacramental in every way.
.
WHY MARRY AT ST. BARNABAS?
Today , couples have many options available to them in the way they choose to live their commitment to one another.  In choosing to be married in the Catholic Church couples are expressing not only their commitment to one another, but also their commitment to the Church and the community of faith.  Therefore a choice to be married “in the Church” at St. Barnabas makes sense if:
-a person has a faithful relationship with the Lord.
-At least one person is a practicing Catholic who takes that commitment seriously.
-Both are physically, psychologically and emotionally mature enough to make a permanent, exclusive commitment.  (given the fact that we expect such maturity we ask that parents not be involved in the wedding planning process at the parish)
-The couple gives witness to their faith and to their appreciation of the Sacrament of Marriage by striving to live according to the teachings of the Church

Please Note:  Parents are respectfully asked NOT to be involved in the preparation and planning process at the parish.  This is for couples ONLY.  If a couple is mature enough to be married, there is no need for mothers or fathers to get involved in this process.  Parents will be kindly asked to have their daughters or sons contact us directly. Questions and concerns brought to us by parents will be re-directed to the couple.  Parents must not attend parish meetings with the couple unless the couple is under the age requirement of the State of NJ.  Thank you!

WEDDINGS TAKE PLACE AT ST. BARNABAS ON SATURDAYS ONLY AT 11:00AM AND 2:00PM, ON FRIDAYS WEDDING CEREMONIES ONLY ARE PERMITTED AT 4:00PM
.
WHAT PREPARATION IS INVOLVED?
The Catholic Church takes marriage very seriously and thus requires a period of preparation and discernment including:
-at least one year of planning and prayerful reflection on the part of the couple, in contact with their parish priest, deacon or pastoral assistant.
-A series of at least THREE meetings with the priest or deacon
o1.  9-12 months for intake interview
o2.  5-6 months before wedding
o3.  2-3 months before wedding to plan the celebration
You are responsible for setting up these meetings.

It is also required by the Church that every couple attend PRE-CANA which will be explained at the first meeting.  Pre-Cana is usually a one or two day commitment and there are various opportunities made available throughout the Diocese.  The Pre-Cana schedule is available to you by clicking the link for the Diocese of Trenton on our Home Page.

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED?
1.A Baptismal Certificate DATED WITHIN ONE YEAR of the wedding (NOT YOUR ORIGINAL) along with a CONFIRMATION certificate.  (If you have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation please discuss this with the priest or deacon.  The RCIA program is available to you, but not mandatory.)
2.The Pre-Marital Inquiry will be done at your First and Second meetings along with the FOCUS instrument which is a compatibility profile.
3.a certificate indicating the completion of the Pre-Cana session
4.a MARRIAGE LICENSE obtained WITHIN  30 DAYS of the Wedding.  It is obtained:
-From the town in NJ where the bride resides
-Or from the town in NJ where the groom resides
-Or from Berkeley Township if the legal residence of both the bride and groom is outside the state of NJ.
The Berkeley Township Clerk can be reached at 732-244-7400 ext. 14.
The witnesses sign the license and THE LICENSE MUST BE BROUGHT TO THE WEDDING REHEARSAL.  Weddings cannot take place without a civil license.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEDDING ITSELF?
The actual details regarding the Marriage Rite of the Catholic Church are the last thing we will plan together.  Before this discussion takes place there is much to talk about regarding the couple’s relationship with each other and God, plans for a future family, communication etc.
At the Third Session the Liturgy planning will take place only after the couple has carefully and prayerfully discussed the actual ceremony.  Pre-Cana should provide you with a book entitled “A Marriage in the Lord.”  This book will walk you through the entire Wedding Liturgy.
The celebration of the Rite of Marriage belongs to the Church at large.  Although there is some flexibility within the Rite, it must be in accordance with Liturgical and Diocesan guidelines.  All sacramental celebrations belong to the community of the
Church, so it is not simply about the couple.  In choosing St. Barnabas for your wedding, we assume you agree with our policies presented here..  We thank you for your cooperation as we work together for the beauty and sanctity of your wedding ceremony.
In order for the liturgy to fully reflect its religious and spiritual nature, we encourage you to invite family members, friends, or members of your wedding party to take special roles during the celebration.

PLANNING THE WEDDING LITURGY
-The date should be arranged with the Church FIRST before any reception plans are made.
-All Wedding plans need to be approved by a priest or deacon from St. Barnabas Parish
-Readings:  You may have two readings from Scripture read by friends or relatives. The Prayer of the Faithful may also be read by friends or relatives.  The priest will read the Gospel.  So you need to choose 3 people to read. Since Scripture must be heard and understood, the person (s) you choose should have a strong and articulate speaking voice.
-If you are having a Mass you may ask 2 people to bring up the Offertory Gifts (bread and wine).
-If you include children in your wedding party we ask that they be at least five years old.  If they carry rings they should carry props, the real rings should be held by the Best Man or Maid of Honor.  It is strongly advised that the couple exercise good judgment when making their choice regarding the involvement of children.  Weddings and public display can be traumatic to some children.  We ask that all children be at least 5 years old and care should be taken when deciding where the child will sit during the service.  Younger children should be seated in a pew with a parent or another relative.  Please make informed and prudent choices in determining how best to involve children in the wedding party. This day should focus on the couple and the Sacrament, it is not meant to be about anything else.

-Visiting Priests and Deacons:  Priests and Deacons from outside St. Barnabas are most welcome.  They need to be delegated by our pastor.  They are asked to respect the practice of the celebration of weddings at St. Barnabas.

-Witnesses:  At least one witness (the BEST MAN and MAID OR MATRON OF HONOR) must be a practicing Catholic according to Church law.

THE REHEARSAL
The rehearsal date should be made at your First meeting.  It is usually the evening before the wedding.  It includes the wedding party and anyone else taking part in the ceremony (readers, gift bearers etc.)  Please ask these people to commit themselves to both the wedding and the rehearsal.  PLEASE BRING YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE TO THE REHEARSAL as well as any optional donations to the priest or deacon.  We want you to come on your wedding day and not have to worry
about any paperwork or money, so we take care of this at the rehearsal. If you plan to have a Unity Candle please bring that to the rehearsal as well.
PLEASE COMMIT TO BEING ON TIME FOR THE WEDDING AND THE REHEARSAL AND TAKE THIS COMMITMENT SERIOUSLY.  THERE IS MUCH HAPPENING IN OUR PARISH ON WEEKENDS.  THANK YOU!

MUSIC
Sacred music is an essential part of the Church’s tradition of prayer, it sets the tone for the experience.  Music invites the assembly to participate with heart, mind and spirit.  Music is not just a “nice touch” to the liturgy, but indeed draws the whole person into the celebration; it is therefore not an option not to have music since it is very much a part of the Sacramental celebration.  Our Music Director will assist you in the selection of the music for your wedding.  Popular songs that have special meaning for the couple are more appropriate at the reception.  To schedule an appointment to plan your music selections, contact our Director of Music Tom Hinz via email at: tom@musicplanning.com

Tom usually meets with couples on Sunday after Mass.  He should be contacted 2-3 months before the wedding.  At an extra fee, Tom can also arrange for extra instruments at your wedding that could include: trumpets, flute and violin, string quartet, mixed quartet, and even a bagpipers for outside the church. If a couple wishes to utilize another organist or musician or soloist, Mr. Hinz must approve the musicians and their musical selections at least one month prior to the wedding.  There is also a bench fee required to be paid to our Music Director if you choose to not utilize our Music Director's services. The standard fee for the wedding music is available at the church office or can be discussed with Tom Hinz when the planning begins. All music fees must be paid either before or at the couple's first appointment with the priest or deacon. For more information, go to Tom's music director website at: www.musicplanning.com  to download a copy of his WEDDING MUSIC GUIDELINES document.

FLOWERS AND WEDDING DECORATIONS
The flowers used for your wedding should be in accordance with the Church environment and Liturgical Season. Please inform your florist that nothing should be moved that is already in the Church or Sanctuary.  The flowers which are placed in the Church are considered a DONATION to St. Barnabas and should remain in the Church after your wedding.  If you wish to take your flowers with you please inform the priest or deacon so we can plan on replacing them for the weekend Masses.  Please also remind your florist that any bows or floral pieces that are placed on pews that use glue, tape, or wire cannot be used.  Rubber bands or pipe cleaners can be used.  Flowers are NOT to be placed on the Altar Table itself.  Arbors, gates, trellises, gazebos, lanterns and torches or any other architectural or garden structures are also prohibited.
A WEDDING CANDLE OR UNITY CANDLE is permitted during Weddings at St. Barnabas, but it must be provided by the couple and brought to the rehearsal.  We recommend that such candles be used at the reception
The principal symbols of the Sacrament of Marriage are the Exchange of Consent (vows) and Rings.  Over the years, other secondary symbols have overshadowed these two key elements of Marriage.  The Wedding Candle is not a part of the Roman Catholic Rite of Marriage.  We suggest that when a Unity or Wedding Candle is used that parents light the taper candles as they are being seated before the ceremony begins, then the couple may light the center candle after they exchange their vows.

AS THE WEDDING COMES TO A CLOSE...
Guests are requested to congratulate the bride and groom with applause in place of rice, birdseed or confetti.  Please do not have your guests throw anything that has to be picked up after your wedding.  There is often more than one wedding at St. Barnabas on a weekend. There is also confessions and Masses to be prepared and celebrated.  Please respect our sacred environment and the other events being held at the parish.  You are not permitted to have rose petals or anything else thrown inside or outside the Church.  Because of Diocesan policy and insurance regulations, runners are not permitted down the center aisle.
We ask that you either have pictures taken or a receiving line after the Wedding, but not both.  Too much time is taken up when couples greet all their guests and then take pictures.  Please choose only one.

PHOTOGRAPHERS AND VIDEOGRAPHERS- NO VIDEO PERMITTED PLEASE READ
As of September, 2009

COUPLES MUST READ AND SIGN BEFORE EACH WEDDING
*PLEASE SHOW A COPY OF THIS POLICY TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

To preserve the sanctity and reverence of the Sacrament of Marriage, Still Photographers must NOT be in the way of any movement (i.e. bride, groom, bridesmaids, etc) during the celebration, they are to stay out of the sanctuary, off the altar, or not to be directly in front of the altar or people.  In other words, the less they are seen the better.  They may use flash photography, but please keep it MINIMAL and do not flash in people’s eyes or faces.
NO VIDEOGRAPHERS ARE PERMITTED IN THE CHURCH.  This is due to many past abuses which take away from the sanctity of the Sacrament.  We are sorry for any inconvenience and hope you understand. However, SINCE VIDEO RECORDING  IS NO LONGER PERMITTED AT WEDDINGS. YOU MAY HAVE YOUR WEDDING VIDEO TAPED WITH OUR NEW AUDIO-VISUAL SYSTEM FOR A FEE OF $85.00.
If you would like to have your Wedding video recorded on a DVD with our in-house HD Camera, please ask your priest or deacon for a form.  Thank you

YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE CHURCH
It is our sincere hope that you remain part of our ongoing community here at St. Barnabas.  We look forward to having you join us in worship and activities.  We invite you as a couple to get involved in our parish community.  It will truly enhance your marriage and family life.  St. Barnabas makes its facilities and staff available to the couple during the months of Marriage Preparation and the actual Wedding Day.  For these services a donation is generally made which goes to the Parish.
For registered parishioners, the fee for Weddings is $350.00 and for non-parishioners with special permission from the pastor the fee is $450.00.  Due to difficulties in the past, these fees must be paid before or at your first appointment with a priest or deacon.  No weddings will be scheduled until the first meeting and fees are paid in full.  Some people have asked why there is such a fee.  Our parish has enormous expenses with electric, maintenance, grounds keeping, sacristan salary, taxes, and general upkeep.  When you think of what the wedding dress alone costs, we feel our fee is a reasonable donation.  If, however you feel you cannot afford this fee please feel free to speak to the pastor, priest or deacon assisting you.  Do not let this be a reason to prevent you from having a Church wedding.  You may wish to thank the priest or deacon with a stipend of your choice, they are not compensated for weddings by the parish.

Alcohol is prohibited on the grounds before, during or after your wedding.  If there is champagne it must be kept in the car.  Please make sure that all persons in the wedding party are sober and respectful of the Church and the Sacrament

With all this in mind, have a wonderful wedding and God bless you both in your new life to come as husband and wife!
